Bildungscampus Heilbronn Library
Reading and learning together
The library at the Bildungscampus Heilbronn is the heart of the campus and the central meeting point for students from several institutions. The cubic exterior of the library building stands in striking contrast to its interior, which is shaped by organic free forms. For Westermann the project focus – with the greatest challenges – lay in the planning, design and installation of the ceilings, while the amorphous seating landscape, the reception counter and the staircase cladding were created in collaboration with partners.
The ceilings from the ground floor to the fifth floor cover a total area of 4,100 square metres. Their basic construction consists of metal cassettes clad with silver-fir wood lamellae that house most of the building services: integrated into the ceilings are luminaires, smoke detectors, sprinklers, loudspeakers as well as climate-control and ventilation devices. What makes the realisation of this ceiling construction complex is its organically shaped free form. The oval, mutually rotated egg-shaped ceiling openings required a high number of bespoke elements, which could largely be prefabricated but had to be individually fitted on site. Installation was carried out floor by floor on demand and in close coordination with the other trades, calling for precise scheduling and adherence – demands that Westermann has stood for through generations: craftsmanship paired with reliability and experience.
